It is Christmas 2007 and my sister has asked permission to give my 11 year old daughter an I-pod as a gift. I agreed knowing that I would be a watchful parent and my daughter would have no access to music from the I-tunes store without me. Christmas arrives and my daughter is thrilled with her gift. Immediately she agrees to the conditions I set forth and in the following months she asks me to listen to various songs on the radio to see if they were ok to download to her I-pod. Everything is going fine.
Then, during spring break in 2008, my daughter tells me about a new song out on the radio and wants me to listen to it. Finally, while riding in the car one day, the song comes on the radio. While listening VERY closely to the lyrics I began to realize that it was most certainly NOT appropriate for my daughter! I hit the roof and began to rant about the liberals and their control of the entertainment industry. The song was, I Kissed A Girl And I Liked It by Katy Perry. Needless to say, I became an ardent ANTI-Katy Perry person. I began a campaign to inform her friends parents of just what their children were listening to. And I still campaign against songs that promote liberal ideology in an attempt to influence our children and the lifestyle they want to live.
I’ve shared that story for a reason. I want it understood that I am NOT a Katy Perry fan in any way shape or form. With that being said, sometimes even liberals are not entirely wrong. Katy Perry has recently released a new song and video entitled Part of Me. I listened to the song and I watched the video because I despise speaking about something that I haven’t even heard or watched. I have read and/or watched videos from right and left wingers as to why they are calling for a boycott of the singer. The following are my thoughts on the entire brouhaha.
Given the fact that the traditional roles of men and women were thrown out the window decades ago, I see no reason for the right to be calling this issue into play. It’s a given fact that women outnumber men in the workforce today. Deal with it! I also see no reason whatsoever for either side to be calling this video “a recruitment ad for the Marine Corp.” as it certainly does not show being a Marine an easy thing. What I found was a woman who was redefining herself after being hurt by the man she loved. I thought Katy Perry did an excellent job of presenting a woman who was not going to let a relationship that ended badly to keep her down. And all in all…I thought the video did a FINE JOB of honoring women who have voluntarily enlisted and are serving their country. My advice to both sides on this…GET OVER YOURSELVES! We have bigger things to worry about in our country right now like national defense, an economy that is in the toilet, and the tyranny trying to take over from the White House itself.
These are my thoughts on Katy Perry’s new video and I am NOT a Katy Perry fan! Regardless of her music that is good and empowering to women, I feel she is not a role model for my daughter. However, let's give credit where credit is due. Ms. Perry's latest musical effort is, in my humble opinion, an empowering message of...if you don't like your life the way it is, change it!
